About our masonry contractor crew in Richmond

A red stucco house with a wide brick-paver driveway and a raised lawn edged by a low stone retaining wall.

Our story, from framing houses to laying brick

I spent the first part of my working life as a carpenter, framing and finishing houses, and I still laugh about how sure I was back then that wood was the whole job. Then a mason I worked alongside got me hooked on brick and stone. I learned the trade on his crews and started this business here in Richmond in 2013.

These days we're best known for repointing old brick, which is raking out worn mortar joints and packing fresh mortar back in, along with chimney work and the walls people build in their yards. A lot of our calls come from owners of older homes and from people planning a new wall, walkway or outdoor kitchen. I care most about doing the right repair, not the biggest one, because old brick and stone can outlast all of us when they're treated well. I'd rather tell you a wall is fine than sell you work it doesn't need. You can see everything we do on our home page, or tell us about your project and I'll come take a look.

Our values, as you'll see them on the job

Here's what you'll notice from the first walk-through to the last swept-up crumb of mortar, because it's how I learned the trade and how our crew runs the work today.

  • You deal with the owner start to finish

I come out to look at the job and walk it with you, and our own crew does the work with me on site to run it. That way nothing gets lost between what we talked about at the estimate and what gets built.

  • You see what we see before you agree

We show you the cracked joints, loose brick or leaning wall and explain in plain words why we're suggesting a repair, so you know the reason before you say yes. If something's fine as it is, we'll tell you that too.

  • Mortar and materials matched to your house

We match new mortar and materials to your house instead of grabbing whatever's on the truck. Repairs blend in with what's already there, and the old brick around them stays sound.

Licensing, insurance and permits for your job

  • Licensed and insured contractor

Fully licensed and insured. In Richmond, the city's Building Division only issues building permits to property owners, their authorized agents and licensed contractors, and a contractor has to show a state license card and a workers' comp insurance certificate when registering for one.

  • Permits and city inspections

The city asks for a building permit before you build, repair or alter a structure unless its exempt list covers the work, and any fence still needs a Planning Division permit even when it skips the building permit. When a job needs a permit, we pull it as the licensed contractor and set up the inspections, and if we're not sure what a city wants, we ask before we start instead of guessing.
